WHAT WE OFFER

Osteopathy

If you're in physical discomfort or pain then osteopathy is a good place to start.

Of all the manual therapies osteopathic training is arguably the most in-depth and thorough. Osteopathic training typically lasts for 5 years with the student receiving either a BSc or, more recently, an MSc in osteopathy. The training covers anatomy, physiology, histology, pathophysiology and pharmacology. Throughout the training the student studies osteopathic evaluation, diagnosis and treatment. Osteopaths evaluate and treat using their detailed knowledge of the body's structure and function. Osteopathic treatment encourages and supports the body to heal itself.

At Osteopathy East, initial consultations last for 60 minutes. This allows ample time to take a case history (covering past and present health issues and the patient's current problem), physical examination of the symptomatic and related areas, and treatment. Throughout the consultation open communication is encouraged and questions welcomed and answered. All consultations at Osteopathy East are held in complete confidentiality and patient safety and comfort are paramount.

Whilst back pain is the most common problem seen, osteopathy can help with a wide variety of other problems including, repetitive strain injury, postural problems caused by driving or work strain, whiplash, sciatica, headaches, the pain of arthritis and sports injuries among many others. Osteopathic treatment consists of a range of styles including massage, stretching, articulation and manipulation of joints and gentle relaxing and unwinding techniques. The appropriate technique is used for the patient and their specific problem.

How can I be sure I am in safe hands?

To legally practice as an osteopath in the UK all osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council and abide by a professional code of conduct.

How many treatments will I need?

Osteopathy is patient centred, which means treatment is geared to you as an individual. We should be able to give you an indication after your first visit. For some acute pain one or two treatments may be all that is necessary. Chronic conditions may need ongoing maintenance.

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy is a gentle, relaxing style of treatment that supports the body's innate capacity for self-regulation, self-maintenance and repair.

Every parent knows that what a child needs most when they are in distress is to be held. Adults are no different. There is a large and growing body of evidence to support the therapeutic use of touch in a wide range of contexts. Cranial osteopaths harness and enhance the power of touch by studying anatomy and physiology in great depth and learning to synchronise with the many ways in which our bodies strive to maintain and restore balance, harmony and health.

Cranial treatment is very gentle, making it suitable for the most vulnerable patients, including babies, children and pregnant women, as well as older people and those suffering from complex issues with their health. Most people find the treatment deeply relaxing and the state it induces is often compared to meditation.

Paediatric Osteopathy

Children of all ages can benefit from osteopathy.

Cranial osteopathy is ideally suited to the treatment of babies and children as its gentle techniques minimise the stress on their delicate, growing bodies. Our paediatric osteopath, Ben Katz runs a children's clinic at Osteopathy East on Tuesdays and Fridays. Ben is an experienced practitioner of cranial osteopathy for babies and children. He holds an MSc in Paediatric Osteopathy from the Osteopathic Centre for Children and led the development of national guidance for osteopaths who work with children and young people. Ben also runs the Osteopathic Centre for Children's weekly clinic for premature babies resident in the neonatal unit at a north London NHS hospital.

Cranial osteopathy for babies

Addressing issues early can have a profound impact and many babies can benefit from gentle support to resolve the minor stresses and strains that can result from the birth process. Cranial osteopathy's gentle techniques are ideally suited to treating babies and there is a small but growing body of evidence to support the benefits of this approach. Midwives, Health Visitors and Breastfeeding Consultants frequently refer babies for osteopathic care.

Children's osteopathy

Toddlers, school age children and teenagers all experience unique challenges as their bodies grow and their relationship with their environment develops. By addressing postural issues, tension and the impact on the body of injuries, illnesses and other challenges, osteopathy can help children to reach their full potential.

Pregnancy osteopathy

Healthy growth and development starts before conception, as maternal health is an important determinant of child health. Osteopathy can help women to prepare for pregnancy and support them to adapt as the baby grows. It can help to ensure they are ready for giving birth and promote a speedy recovery for mother and baby afterwards. Ben offers specialist care for women during pregnancy and postpartum at Osteopathy East.
