Rick Harter

BSc (hons) Ost. MSc Pain Management

Rick Harter, founder and osteopath at Osteopathy East
Rick is a fantastic Osteopath and as a client I thoroughly recommend his services. He provides targeted treatments with a high degree of professional knowledge. Rick also has great communication skills and has helped me enormously with a disc injury.
— Janet

I have been a physical therapist for over 25 years and am the owner and founder of Osteopathy East. My teenage interest in Zen and martial arts led me to train in the Japanese body work Shiatsu. Having completed the 3 year Shiatsu training programme at the London College of Shiatsu in my early twenties, I went on to do the 5 year BSc in Osteopathy at the London School of Osteopathy.

I completed a 2 year MSc in Pain Management at Cardiff University, specialising in the management of musculoskeletal pain, specifically back pain. My one year research project reviewed the evidence for core stabilising exercises in avoiding and reducing low back pain.

I have been an honorary tutor on the Pain Management MSc course at Cardiff University and a clinic supervisor at the London School of Osteopathy. In 2011 I was selected to sit on an advisory panel for the British Pain Society to formulate best practice guidelines in the NHS for the assessment and management of acute pain.

As well as general osteopathic practice I have worked with specific patient groups including adults with learning disabilities, AIDS/HIV, and substance abuse rehabilitation. I have previously been the osteopath for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). For many years I peer reviewed manuscripts for The Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies and have been on the editorial board of Heliyon, an open access journal published by Elsevier.

I am registered with the General Osteopathic Council. In 2004 I opened the Broadway Market Osteopathic Clinic and in 2012 moved the practice to Mare Street, renaming it Osteopathy East.

I believe in the importance of practising from an evidence informed basis and keep up to date with the latest studies and developments in osteopathy and related fields. I also realise the need for an experiential and intuitive approach when working with people. Pain management and movement rehabilitation are my two areas of particular interest, which complement and enrich my traditional osteopathic approach.

— Alison
Rick is less an osteopath and more a magician. I subject myself to a wide variety of wear-and-tear and Rick always manages to mend me. I regularly recommend him to friends and family, all of whom also sing his praises. An excellent practitioner and we always have a jolly good chat to boot. What more could you ask for?

Ben Katz

MSc, BOst, FSCCO, FHEA

Ben Katz, cranial and paediatric osteopath at Osteopathy East
Ben is undoubtedly a skillful and knowledgeable osteopath. But for me, what sets him apart is his absolute devotion to my well-being. Ben has become an invaluable part of my support team!
— Rob Sykes

I am an experienced cranial osteopath with a special interest in complex cases and paediatric osteopathy. I enjoy working with people of all ages and I've trained extensively in the osteopathic care of babies, children and pregnant women. I joined Rick at Osteopathy East when he moved to Mare Street in 2012.

I discovered osteopathy in my late teens when I saw an osteopath for low back pain and found a friend and mentor who also helped me to recover from the associated depression. His infectious enthusiasm inspired me to study osteopathy.

Osteopathy for children

I have always been interested in treating children and was clear from the outset that my undergraduate training was not sufficient. I qualified from the British School of Osteopathy in 2004 and started my career working full time at the Osteopathic Centre for Children, where I completed an MSc in Paediatric Osteopathy in 2006. I worked and taught at the OCC until 2013, when I became a father myself. Visit my website to read more about paediatric osteopathy and the services I provide for children here in Hackney, East London.

Cranial osteopathy

The gentle treatment style of cranial osteopathy and the deeply relaxing, almost meditative state that it induces, have always appealed to me. I studied the cranial approach in depth at the Sutherland Cranial College of Osteopathy and joined the teaching faculty in 2015. I've also completed the nine year Biodynamics programme developed by James Jealous. If you'd like to learn more, this article about cranial osteopathy explains my approach and what you can expect in detail.

Baby cranial osteopathy

Addressing issues early can have a profound impact so working with babies has always been an important part of my practice. Cranial osteopathy's gentle techniques are ideally suited to treating newborns and I have always been interested in how osteopathy can help the most vulnerable patients. I now run the Osteopathic Centre for Children's service for premature babies in the NICU at a north London general hospital. Visit my website to read more about my cranial osteopathy clinic for babies here at Osteopathy East.

Pregnancy osteopathy

A healthy start in life begins with a healthy pregnancy and I have a special interest in the care of pregnant women. Cranial Osteopathy's gentle, relaxing approach can help the body adapt as the baby grows and support women to prepare for giving birth. You can read more about pregnancy osteopathy on my website.

Professional development

In addition to my clinical work, I've always felt it was important to contribute to the development of my profession. I am a past President of the Institute of Osteopathy and helped to establish the Osteopathic Alliance and the Osteopathic Development Group. As part of this work, I led the development of national guidance for osteopaths who work with children. If you're interested to know more about my career in osteopathy, you can read my full biography here.

Ben is a terrific osteopath, who has genuine concern for his patients and their wellbeing. Following the birth of my son, Ben has treated him a few times. I've been very impressed with his knowledge and professionalism and would highly recommend him.

Ben has treated my back pain and since, the pain has decreased and I feel I am recovering well. He really took the time to understand what the issue was and was really precise with what he has done. Since the day I left the appointment, I can tell I am really feeling better! Highly recommended!
– Martin
Ben has treated two of my children in the past for neck pain and nose and breathing issues with great success. Both my children come out of the sessions much more comfortable, calm and relaxed and after a few sessions their issues seem to have disappeared. I like Ben's holistic approach to one's wellbeing and would highly recommend him to alleviate pain and improve overall posture and balance.
– Mylene
